I love the practice of setting New Year resolutions. It always gives me the feeling of a fresh start, a clear slate, as well as the opportunity to reflect on the past year. Maybe there were things I wanted to accomplish that went undone, maybe there are directions I see this next year taking me, or maybe there are destinations I just can’t wait another year to visit. This year, I have five resolutions for myself. Some are classics that I’d like to continue into this year, and others are new goals or targets that I would love to see myself accomplish this year. I’m sharing them with you in the hopes that maybe you’ll find something that will help you with your resolutions or goals for 2016.
Resolution #1 : Learn something new every day. This is something I have been resolving to do every year for the past 5 or so years, and it is something I will keep as a resolution for the next 5o. When I began this resolution I was in college so discovering something new everyday was pretty much a given. After graduation, I used to try looking up something new on Wikipedia everyday, but now, with as far as the internet has come, there are a lot more interesting ways to continue this resolution. The Khan Academy, edX and TEDTalks are all websites that I use to learn new things and continue my education. The Khan Academy and edX are both websites where you can take free online courses that are set-up similar to a college course on a huge variety of subjects. TEDTalks are presentations from the most interesting and innovative people around the globe that are truly making a difference in the world. I like to put one on in the morning while I am doing my hair or makeup and start my day off on a positive note.
Resolution 2: Become a morning person. Ugh, how I wish I was one of those people who could function normally on 4 hours sleep. But, for me, it takes a healthy 8 hours, so often I find myself seriously struggling come 7am because I’ve been up until 12pm the night before. I end up starting my day around 8:30 or 9 which feels like I’ve already wasted part of the day’s potential, so this is the year I start gaining back those lost hours. In order to make that happen I am going to start incorporating exercise, less coffee, and no cell phones in bed mantras into my everyday life. I’ve started Kayla Itsines’ Bikini Body Guide this week to kick things off!
Resolution #3: Give 100% in everything, always. Exactly what it sounds like. I find it is so easy to operate on about 80-90% of my full capabilities in most situations. However, this year I am resolving to put all my effort into everything in my life: work, blog, marriage, friendships and personal development.
Resolution #4: Improve my French. In college I took 4 levels of French, and basically all I remember is “Bonjour!” So, after an abysmal effort at reviving it last year, I am going to try to improve myself back the level of conversational French that I was at 4 years ago. I have been using Duolingo to work on it up until this point, and I am going to layer on some Meetup events for French language in as well. Plus loads of French wine and movies. For the practice, of course.
Resolution #5: Learn to manage my finances. Embarrassingly, I think I am afraid of my finances. I tend to be one of those people who look at their bank account once every couple of weeks, very reluctantly. Sometimes it’s good, and sometimes it’s bad. I usually have the jist of what is going on, but I’ve never really felt in control. This is the year that I stop all of that and conquer my fear of my finances. I’m going to start using Mint to track all my personal finances. You can use it to track all of your transactions and sort them into categories to see where you are spending your money, set goals, and balance your budget. I’m secretly hoping this leads to me finding more money for clothes.
I hope you have found something you enjoyed here or a new tool to help you with your own resolutions. I’d love to hear what your resolutions are, and what you are doing to achieve them this year.
